Concord Clipped in Doubleheader by King

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team dropped two games to King, 6-0 and 5-2, Tuesday afternoon at the CU Softball Field in non-conference action.

Game 1: King 6 – Concord 0
The Mountain Lions (4-11) were held without a hit by King (12-6) pitcher Madison Walter.

Sophomore pitcher Nancy-Jo Roberts matched Walter early on as she gave up just one run in the first five innings. The Tornado were able to get five runs across in the sixth inning. In the first five innings, Roberts limited King to just three hits and a second-inning run.

Graduate infielder Sarah Thompson drew a walk in the first inning while sophomore infielder Courtney Raines was hit by a pitch in the seventh.

Roberts (3-6) struck out three over seven innings.

Game 2: King 5 – Concord 2
Despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, Concord was unable to hold off the Tornado later in the game.

Freshman catcher/infielder Lorelai Ellerby hit her first career home run in the second inning after freshman catcher/utility Morgan Gleason had led off the frame with a double. CU kept the pressure on in the second inning as it loaded the bases with two infield singles and a walk. But, KU was able to escape giving up just two runs.

King sliced the lead in half in the third and took a 3-2 edge with two runs in the fourth.

The Mountain Lions pieced together a rally in the bottom of the fourth after a single and stolen base from sophomore utility Kylee Stacy pushed two runners into scoring position. Again, King was able to strand the runners.

Over the final three innings, Concord was able to get just one runner on base as the Tornado added two runs in the sixth.

Stacy had a pair of hits in the contest while adding a stolen base. Ellerby notched two RBI.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Rachael Koller (1-3) allowed five runs over seven innings while recording three strikeouts.

After an off day Wednesday, CU welcomes Salem to the CU Softball Field 2:00 p.m. Thursday.
