WHEELING, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team's run in the Mountain East Conference Tournament came to an end Saturday afternoon as it lost 78-54 to Charleston inside WesBanco Arena in the semifinal round.
Early on, Concord (14-17) hung with the Golden Eagles (23-7) as a jumper from junior guard
Maddie Ratcliff got CU within 9-7 with 5:21 remaining in the first quarter. However, Charleston finished the period on an 10-1 run.
The Mountain Lions trimmed the deficit to eight points a handful of times in the second quarter as a layup from junior guard
Nakaila Gray made it a 30-22 game with 2:13 remaining in the first half. But, UC scored the final five points of the half to lead by 13 at the break.
Charleston ran the lead out to 17 points to start the second half. Junior guard
Jaisah Smith answered as she made one of her two three-pointers to get back within 39-25. The 14-point margin was as close as CU would get for the remainder of the game.
Gray continued her strong showing at the MEC Tournament as she scored 14 points. Freshman forward
Abbie Smith netted 13 points and added seven rebounds. J. Smith recorded eight points and equaled A. Smith's rebound output.
Saturday was the final game in the careers of senior forward
Lauryn Avery, graduate guard
Maggie Guynn and junior guard
Ale Sydnor.
Guynn finishes her career with 1,591 points, eighth in program history. The Pearisburg, Virginia native also ranks top 10 at Concord in field goals made, free throws made, three-pointers made, free-throw percentage and three-point percentage.
Over her five-year career, Guynn won 87 games and became the only CU player to appear in three MEC Semifinals.
