Concord Goes 1-1 Against UVA-Wise

Athens W.Va. – The Concord University softball team split a doubleheader with UVA-Wise at the CU softball field Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action, winning 2-0 before dropping game two, 12-4.

CU is 2-9 on the season. UVA-Wise goes to 2-6 in 2023.

Game 1: Concord 2 – UVA-Wise 0
Starting in the circle for the Mountain Lions was sophomore pitcher Nancy-Jo Roberts (2-5) who threw a complete game shutout. Roberts ended the game two strikeouts and left 13 base runners stranded throughout her seven-inning campaign.

With the game still scoreless going into the bottom of the fifth, freshman catcher Morgan Gleason led the inning off with a single to right center field. After two quick outs, sophomore outfielder Imani Campbell drew a walk advancing Gleason to second. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch. With two outs and two runners in scoring position, freshman infielder Lacie Lewis slapped a single into right field scoring both runners and taking a 2-0 lead.

Roberts worked with traffic on the bases all day, and stranded multiple runners on base in five of her seven innings of work. UVA-Wise got the go-ahead run to the plate in the sixth. And in the seventh, Roberts retired the Cavaliers in order to secure the win.

The Mountain Lions ended the game with five hits.

Game 2: UVA-Wise 12 - Concord 4
The Mountain lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI from senior infielder Sarah Thompson scoring Lewis.
After giving up two runs in the top of the second, the Mountain Lions bounced back and scored in the bottom of the second after senior outfielder Mikayah Pulliam doubled to right field and was singled home by Campbell to tie the game.

The Cavaliers plated five runs in the top of the third. CU had a response in the bottom as it took advantage of a wild pitch and error to manufacture two more runs. But, the offensive momentum continued for UVA-Wise in the top of the fifth as it scored five times.

Sophomore infielder Courtney Raines, Lewis, Campbell, and Thompson all recorded a hit in the contest. Thompson and Campbell ended the game with an RBI each. Sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Bauer (0-2) recorded six strikeouts. Bauer is currently eighth all time at Concord for strikeouts.

Concord has a break in action as it does not play until March 6 when it hosts Bluefield University.
