Concord Comes Up Short in NCAA Tournament Game at Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Concord University women's soccer team put together a furious second-half rally, but ultimately came up short in a 3-2 loss to Kutztown in the First Round of the NCAA Division II Tournament Friday night at Keystone Field.

CU (12-7-2) struck early in the game with a goal in the third minute. After a throw in by the Mountain Lions, graduate forward Alexa Todd flipped a pass over to junior midfielder Leah Fleming at the top of the 18-yard box. Fleming took one touch and fired in her third goal of the season.

The Bears (15-1-5) scored in the 19th minute as a shot inched its way over the goal line tying the game at 1-1.

Kutztown scored twice in a 74-second span in the 37th and 38th minutes to open a 3-1 advantage at halftime.

With chances limited for Concord throughout the game, the Mountain Lions found the back of the net in the 63rd minute. A corner kick from CU was unable to be clear by KU. After an initial shot wasn't saved cleanly, junior forward Sydney Tucker scored her team-best 12th goal of the season on the rebound.

Junior forward Kylene Franklin was credited with her third assist of the season on the Tucker goal.

Kutztown was able to hold the Maroon and Gray at bay for the remainder of the game as the 12th-ranked Bears advanced to the round of 32 to take on PSAC East rival West Chester.

Concord took seven shots in the game with five combined coming from Todd (three) and Tucker (two).

Junior goalkeeper Savannah Bates stopped four shots in the game.

Despite the loss, Concord clinched its fifth straight season of at least 12 wins and made the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the last four seasons.
