PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Concord University football team ended it season with a 68-21 loss to UNC Pembroke Saturday night in a Mountain East Conference game at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.
After falling behind 17-0 through the first 16 minutes of the game, Concord (1-10, 1-9 MEC) pieced together an eight-play, 65-yard drive that ended with a two-yard touchdown plunge from junior running back
Kevon Young-Warren. The key play on the drive was a 27-yard pass from senior quarterback
Jack Mangel to graduate wide receiver
D'Andre Hicks on a third down at midfield. Two UNCP (7-3, 6-3 MEC) personal fouls also aided the drive.
The Mountain Lions were able to hold UNC Pembroke for the remainder of the half to trail 17-7 at the intermission
Two touchdowns in the first four minutes of the second half from the Braves extended their lead out to 31-7 with 11:17 remaining in the third.
Concord was forced to punt away on its next series, but on the third play for UNCP on the ensuing drive junior defensive back
Mekhi Williams stripped the ball away and freshman linebacker
Brodee Rice scooped up the fumble and ran it back 44 yards for CU's first defensive score of the season.
The final Mountain Lion score came in the first minute of the fourth quarter as sophomore running back
TJ Finney capped a quick three-play, 33-yard drive with a five-run touchdown run to get Concord back within 45-21.
The Braves scored the final 23 points of the game.
In his final collegiate game, Mangel threw for 133 yards, but was held without a touchdown. He finishes his career with 9,349 yards and 81 touchdowns.
Sixth-year wide receiver
Kris Copeland caught seven passes for 34 yards. Junior tight end
Jordyn Bentley had a team-best 46 receiving yards. Copeland concluded his career with 210 receptions for 2,154 yards.
Williams tied for the team high with eight tackles to go with 3.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Freshman defensive back
Elijah Copes and sophomore defensive back
Trennon Mitchell both had their first career interceptions. The Mountain Lions forced a season-high three turnovers.
