Concord Handles Davis & Elkins in Straight-Sets Sweep

ELKINS. W.Va. - The Concord University volleyball team swept Davis & Elkins 3-0 in a Mountain East Conference matchup Friday night inside the McDonnell Center. 

Final Score: Concord 3, Davis & Elkins 0 (25-17,25-21,25-10)

Set 1
A trio of kills from freshman outside hitter Chloe Thompson, freshman outside hitter Meg Williams, and senior middle hitter Kyndra Pilant got Concord (12-5, 3-2 MEC) out to an 8-3 lead. And the Mountain Lions built the lead to as much as 14-6 through 20 points, and won by the same margin. Thompson, Williams, and Pilant all had three kills in the opening frame. Pilant also collected four of CU's seven blocks in the set to give the Mountain Lions a 1-0 advantage, 25-17. 

Set 2
Concord quickly responded to a fast start by the Senators (1-15, 0-4 MEC) with a kill from Williams and an ace from Thompson to tie the second set 4-4. Freshman right side Natalie Brown kept CU in the set as she smashed a kill to knot the game at 11-11. Already leading 19-17, three straight points was the difference for Concord. Pilant added four kills down the stretch to clinch the set 25-21. 

Set 3
After a brief back-and-forth, the Mountain Lions rattled off nine points in a row sparked by back-to-back service aces from freshman setter Declyn Tooze to take a 15-4 lead. Freshman outside hitter Kaileigh Hodges picked up a kill to widen the CU lead 18-5. Back-to-back kills from sophomore right side Maddie Bohan completed the 3-0 sweep over the Senators, 25-10. 

Match Stats
The Mountain Lions recorded a new season-high in blocks with 12 total in the match. Pliant had six blocks, Williams had four blocks and senior middle hitter Csayjah Whitelow, freshman middle hitter Jasmine Anderson, and Brown all recorded two blocks each. Williams and Pilant picked up 11 and nine kills, respectively. Thompson notched her seventh career double-double as she hit for 10 kills with 10 digs. Richmond finished with 16 assists and two aces, while Tooze added 14 assists and three aces. Freshman defensive specialist Allie Davis ended the match with 14 digs. 



The Mountain Lions return to the Carter Center to host the Concord Triangular Tuesday against Glenville State and Bluefield State. The first match is at 3:00 p.m.
