Concord Overcomes Slow Start, Beats West Virginia Wesleyan in Four Sets

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - The Concord University volleyball team defeated West Virginia Wesleyan in four sets Tuesday evening in a Mountain East Conference match inside the Rockefeller Center. 
Final Score: Concord 3, West Virginia Wesleyan 1 (15-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-18)
Set 1
CU (15-12 5-7 MEC) grabbed its first lead of the game on back-to-back kills from freshman outside hitter Chloe Thompson and senior middle hitter Kyndra Pilant 2-1. Kills from senior middle hitter Csayjah Whitelow and freshman right side Natalie Brown cut the Bobcats (6-17 1-11 MEC)lead to four points, 10-6. Whitelow finished the opening set with three kills as WVWC took a 1-0 lead, 25-15. 
Set 2
Another set started off with kills from Thompson and Pilant gave Concord the early advantage 4-3. The Mountain Lions erased a 4-0 Bobcats run with a 7-0 run sparked by freshman outside hitter Meg Williams and Brown to take a 11-7 lead. Two kills from Brown and Whitelow extended CU's lead 15-10. Freshman setter Paige Richmond and Pilant added aces while Brown smashed her fourth kill of the set to give the Mountain Lions a 2-1 lead in the contest 25-21. 
Set 3
Early kills from Williams and Richmond evened the third set 5-5. Concord was able to grab the lead on an ace from freshman defensive specialist Allie Davis 9-8. Thompson provided a pair of kills to extend the Mountain Lions lead to three. Back-to-back service aces from freshman setter Declyn Tooze saw CU earn its largest lead of the game, 20-14. A late kill from Thompson was enough to hold off a late WVWC surge to earn Concord a 2-1 lead, 25-22. 
Set 4
Back-to-back blocks from Whitelow and Brown, paired with a kill from Williams and an ace from Tooze sparked a 4-0 run to take an 8-4 lead. Three kills from Thompson regained CU the lead 14-13. Thompson, Brown, and Williams all added two kills in the latter half of the set to secure Concord its fifth MEC victory of the season, 25-18. 
Match Stats
Thompson notched her 10th double-double of the season as she led the Mountain Lions with 15 kills to go with 11 digs. Williams also got to double-digit kills as she had 11 while Brown trailed her with eight kills. Tooze led CU with 23 assists with three service aces in the contest, while Richmond picked up 16 assists and tied her career-high of 11 digs. Davis hauled in a team-high 18 digs. Brown and Whitelow collected four total blocks each, and Pilant had three total blocks. 
The Mountain Lions return to the Carter Center to face South Division rival Charleston at 7:00 p.m. Friday.
