Concord Falters at West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team lost to West Virginia State 3-0 in a Mountain East Conference matchup inside the Walker Convocation Center Tuesday evening.  
 
Final Score: West Virginia State 3, Concord 0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-21) 
 
Set 1 
Three kills from freshman outside hitter Meg Williams gave CU (14-10 4-6 MEC) an early advantage over the Yellow Jackets (19-4 9-1 MEC), 7-6. Senior middle hitter Kyndra Pilant hammered a kill to stop the ensuing WVSU run and tie the set 8-8. Two more kills and an ace from Williams cut the Yellow Jackets lead to two points, 15-13. A 5-1 run closed out the first set in favor of WVSU, 25-16.  
 
Set 2 
Freshman setter Declyn Tooze notched a kill to cut West Virginia State's early lead to 12-6. Freshman outside hitter Chloe Thompson and Pilant added kills to make the score 16-8. A 6-0 WVSU run gave them a 2-0 advantage in the match 25-9.  
 
Set 3 
Freshman right side Natalie Brown picked up her first kill of the game early in the third frame as Concord led 2-1. CU extended its lead 8-5 with a kill and an ace from Thompson. An 8-0 WVSU run was halted when freshman setter Paige Richmond picked up a kill, 13-9. Brown picked up a solo block and freshman defensive specialist Allie Davis served an ace in the closing moments of the match as West Virginia State won the third and final set, 25-21.   
 
Match Stats 
Davis led all players with 16 digs to go along with three assists and a lone ace. Williams and Thompson led CU with eight and seven kills, respectively. Richmond finished the game with 12 assists. Williams, Thompson, Pilant, and senior middle hitter Csayjah Whitelow all assisted on three Concord blocks.  
 
The Mountain Lions travel to Bristol, Tennessee to face King University in a non-conference match Wednesday starting at 6:00 p.m.
