Concord Drops Home Contest Against Wheeling

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team lost to Wheeling 3-0 in a Mountain East Conference matchup Friday night inside the Carter Center.
 
Final Score: Wheeling 3, Concord 0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-13)
 
Set 1
A kill from senior middle hitter Kyndra Pilant put CU (14-4 4-4 MEC) in the scoring column as it trailed the Cardinals (16-6 7-1 MEC) 4-3 in the opening set. The Mountain Lions closed in on Wheeling's lead 15-8 on another kill from Pilant. Wheeling closed out the game on a 5-1 run, final score 25-12. Concord picked up four total blocks in the first set.
 
Set 2
Freshman outside hitter Meg Williams and freshman right side Natalie Brown added a kill each to cut the Cardinals lead to one point, 8-7 early in the second frame. Brown added two more kills to make the score 11-9 in favor of WU. Two 3-0 runs by the Mountain Lions would not be enough as Wheeling took a 2-0 set advantage, 25-20.
 
Set 3
A Wheeling attack error and a kill from freshman outside hitter Chloe Thompson saw CU grab its first lead of the evening, 2-1. A kill from freshman setter Declyn Tooze stopped a 6-0 Cardinals run to bring the scoring to 13-6 Wheeling. Brown, Pilant, and Thompson picked up kills in the closing moments of the match as Wheeling completed the sweep 25-13.
 
Match Stats
Senor middle hitter Csayjah Whitelow contributed to six of Concord's eight blocks in the match. Pilant, Williams, and Thompson tied for the team lead in kills with six kills each. Brown added five kills and two blocks. Tooze and freshman setter Paige Richmond each recorded 10 assists and combined for eight digs. Freshman defensive specialist Allie Davis finished the contest with eight digs and two assists.
 
The Mountain Lions return to action Saturday afternoon to face West Liberty in the Carter Center starting at 1:00 p.m.
