BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw with West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday evening in a Mountain East Conference game at Culpepper Stadium.
In the first half, CU (5-2-5, 2-2-5 MEC) was able only to get one shot off as West Virginia Wesleyan (7-4-2, 4-3-2 MEC) took eight shots, but only one on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Keegan Grant made one save in the first 45 minutes while Concord defense was called upon to take a shot off the line in the 41
st minute.
The second half was much more balanced in the run of play.
Concord had a pair of attempts in the 66
th minute with sophomore midfielder
Tomas Kelly missing right. And after a corner kick, junior midfielder
Andre Nicholson's shot was high of the frame of goal.
Perhaps the best Mountain Lion shot of the contest was from junior midfielder
Alessandro Raffl in the 81
st minute. Off a counter attack, Raffl received a cross at the top of the 18-yard box and fired a shot that was tipped over the cross bar.
Grant had to make a similar save in the 85
th minute as he tipped a Wesleyan shot over the cross bar.
The final two chances of the game came with 1:08 left and 0:35 remaining. Grant trapped a WVWC free kick to keep the game scoreless, and on the ensuing transition opportunity for the Mountain Lions, junior forward Fabian Amhhof had his only shot of the game turned aside.
WVWC finished with a 14-8 shots edge, but Concord owned 7-6 advantage after halftime. Raffl registered three shots while Kelly notched two.
The game featured 14 total corner kicks with Wesleyan holding an 8-6 edge.
Grant made three saves in the contest for his fifth shutout of the season.
Sunday was the second scoreless draw between CU and Wesleyan this season after a 0-0 tie September 13.
The Mountain Lions return home from a two-game road swing to face West Liberty 1:00 p.m. Wednesday.
