ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University football team jumped out to a 14-0 lead on Glenville State on its way to a 21-7 win Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Callaghan Stadium.
With limited offense in the first quarter, the game's first score came in the second quarter as junior running back
Thurlow Wilkins capped a 10-play, 94-yard drive with a 26-yard touchdown run at the 10:46 mark of the period.
The lead remained the same at halftime, but the Mountain Lions (2-0, 1-0 MEC) started the third quarter with a quick scoring drive. It was Wilkins that rushed the final 20 yards of a 54-yard drive less than two minutes into the second half.
On Glenville State's second possession of the second half, the Pioneers (1-1, 0-1 MEC) were able to get on the board as a 63-yard drive ended with a six-yard touchdown pass.
Hanging onto a 14-7 lead in the early part of the fourth quarter, the Concord defense stepped up—as it had much of the day—and put the brakes on a Glenville State drive.
With the ball at the CU 33-yard line, fifth-year senior defensive lineman
Nathan Lease forced Concord's first fumble of the season at the 27-yard line, and fifth-year senior linebacker
Ty Maust jumped on the loose ball.
The Mountain Lions were able to burn nearly seven off of the fourth-quarter clock that ended with a four-yard touchdown toss from senior quarterback
Jack Mangel to junior wide receiver
Jarod Bowie.
With 3:16 left in the game, Concord had restored a 14-point advantage.
The next GSU possession was snuffed out by senior defensive back
Marcellus Saint who intercepted a pass at the goal line to secure the victory for the Mountain Lions.
Concord was outgained in the game (383-366), but forced two turnovers while not committing a turnover on the offensive side.
Saint made a team-high 11 tackles (10 solo) to go with the fourth-quarter interception. Maust recorded eight stops in the game. Fifth-year senior defensive lineman
Dajor Davenport came up with 1.5 sacks.
Wilkins ran for 119 yards and two scores. Mangel finished the day with 181 passing yards and a touchdown. The offensive line also kept Mangel from getting sacked in the game.
Bowie made four catches for 52 yards and a score.
The Mountain Lions put their 2-0 mark up against West Virginia Wesleyan on the road 2:00 p.m. September 17.
