ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University head women's basketball coach Tesla Southcott announced the hiring of Madison Heller as an assistant coach Monday afternoon.

In addition to her duties as the assistant women's basketball coach, Heller (formerly May) will take over as the head women's golf coach beginning in the fall of 2022.

Southcott and the women's basketball program welcome back one of the best player to ever don the Maroon and Gray.

"I'm excited for this opportunity to give back to the community and a program that has given so much to me," Heller said. "I would like to thank President Dr. Kendra Boggess, our Athletics Director Kevin Garrett and Coach Southcott for giving me this opportunity.

"I'm looking forward to carrying on the culture and winning tradition that Coach Kenny Osborne and Coach Southcott have established," she continued. "It meant a lot to part of the Concord women's basketball family as a player and now even more as a coach."

The Athens native suited up for the Mountain Lions from 2016-20 where she became one of the top all-around players in program history, and earned all-region honors during her final two seasons at Concord. Heller finished with 1,788 career points, third all-time in program history to go with 762 rebounds (fourth at CU) and 331 assists (tied for fourth). She also ranks top 10 in program history in free throws made (second / 509), blocks (fourth / 94) and field-goal percentage (sixth / 47.4). Over her four-year playing career at CU, Heller became the only player in program history with 1,500 career points, 750 rebounds and 250 assists.

"Having Madison return to Concord means that we keep our coaching staff within the Concord women's basketball family," Southcott said. "I've always wanted to have someone sitting next to me on the bench that I know very well, and Madison is someone that will bring loyalty and passion to our coaching staff on a daily basis."

As a player, Heller was a driving force behind Concord having a +16-win improvement from the 2016-17 season to the 2018-19 season as CU evolved from seven wins to 13 wins to back-to-back 20-win seasons during her junior and senior seasons. Additionally, Concord won a single-season program record 23 games during the 2018-19 campaign.

No stranger to success as a player, Heller was around a winning program during her only season on the sidelines. During the shortened 2021 season, she was the top assistant for head coach Kim Stephens and the Glenville State women's basketball program. Heller was on the bench for a 12-4 mark and a run to the Mountain East Conference Championship Game as well as an NCAA Tournament appearance.

During the 2021 season, Glenville State climbed into the top five of the national rankings as it won 10 of its first 11 games.

Furthermore, Heller has experience on the golf course as she was a member of the women's golf team during her sophomore and junior years at Concord. She was a scoring golfer at the 2017 MEC Championship at Glade Springs Resort.
