CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team split the final two games of the weekend series with Charleston, falling 11-0, but rebounding to win 24-10, Monday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Segra Field at the Welch Athletic Complex
Concord is now 29-15-1 overall and 18-10 in the MEC. UC is 30-13 overall and 22-6 versus the conference.
Game 1: Charleston 11 – Concord 0
Charleston grabbed an early 4-0 lead after an inning as it limited the Mountain Lions' offense.
CU was able to put together a scoring threat versus the Golden Eagles in the top of the second inning as it loaded the bases on singles from junior infielder
Daniel Layne and freshman infielder/pitcher
MJ Hunter as well as a walk to junior outfielder
Josh Adkins. However, UC's Ethan Soderna escaped the jam with back-to-back strikeouts.
The Mountain Lions got leadoff singles in the third and fourth innings, but was unable to plate any runs before a six-run sixth inning from Charleston.
Layne recorded two hits for the Mountain Lions.
Freshman pitcher
Jacob Nester (4-3) went five innings as he struck out five and allowed seven runs.
Game 2: Concord 24 – Charleston 10
The Mountain Lions erupted for a season-high 24 runs with half of those coming in the fourth inning to break open the nightcap.
With the game knotted at 1-1, Concord sent 14 straight batters to the plate in the fourth before an out was recorded. During the rally, fifth-year senior outfielder
Brandon Bayne had the go-ahead RBI single. Junior outfielder
Kyle Keenan plated two with a base hit to extend the lead to 7-1. Sophomore infielder
Michael Dupont had one of two extra-base hits during the rally with a two-run double to right center field to push the lead to 11-1. Adkins followed with a run-scoring triple.
Up 13-1, CU had to withstand a long inning at the plate from Charleston as the Golden Eagles cut the deficit down to 13-10 after four innings.
After both teams went quietly in the fifth, Concord restored a comfortable margin by scoring eight times in the sixth. Junior catcher
Hunter Steel tallied a two-RBI single to start the scoring. Four batters later, sophomore catcher/infielder
Chris Satcher knocked in two runs with a long single to center field.
Keenan tallied one of his four RBI on the day, and Layne drove in his third run of the game as part of a three-run seventh inning.
Fifth-year senior infielder
Anthony Stehlin (2-1) helped fight off the UC rally in the fourth inning as he recorded the final out in the rally. Stehlin tossed 3.1 innings as he scattered four hits and struck out four.
CU notched 22 hits on the day as seven of the nine starters for the Mountain Lions had multiple hits. Stehlin added three hits and three runs scored offensively. Adkins finished a home run shy of the cycle as he went 4-for-6 with two RBI. Keenan recorded three hits to go with his four RBI.
Bayne, Layne, Satcher and Steel all had three RBI.
Concord welcomes Glenville State to Anderson Field 1:00 p.m. Friday for the start of the final series of the regular season.
