Concord Sweeps Glenville State, 2-0, 7-3

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team won both games of its Mountain East Conference doubleheader against Glenville State Wednesday evening at the CU Softball Field.

Game 1: Concord 2 - Glenville State 0
Concord (10-24, 3-11 MEC) scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning and held Glenville State (6-20, 2-12 MEC) to two hits en route to a game one win.

After a scoreless 2.5 innings, CU started the bottom of the third with leadoff single on a bunt from fifth-year senior outfielder Hanna Hylton. Sophomore outfielder Imani Campbell came into the game to pinch run for Hylton. Freshman utility player Delaney Fulk also singled on a bunt and advanced Campbell to second. Senior pitcher/outfielder Laura Thompson then roped a pitch into left center field for a double, allowing Campbell to score and Fulk to reach third base. The Mountain Lions added their second run of the game on a wild pitch that scored Fulk.

Thompson batted 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI.

Freshman pitcher/first baseman Caitlyn Bauer (6-9) was dominant in the contest, earning the win in a complete game effort. Bauer struck out 10 batters, while allowing runs and facing just two batters over the minimum.

Bauer started the game retiring the first 10 batters she faced and the final out of the game set a new career high in strikeouts for the Lexington, North Carolina native. It was the second shutout of the season for Bauer.

Game 2: Concord 7 - Glenville State 3
Three runs in the bottom of the third and two runs in the bottom of the fifth allowed Concord hold off Glenville State in game two.

In the bottom of the first, freshman third baseman Kylee Stacy reached on an error, stole second, and later advanced to third on a groundout. Freshman shortstop/utility player Courtney Raines singled to right field to score Stacy and put Concord up 1-0.

The Mountain Lions plated all three runs with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. Stacy reached on another error to start the rally. Senior third baseman/outfielder Sarah Thompson reached first after getting hit with a pitch. Raines continued the two-out rally by lining a ball into right field that was misplayed. Both Stacy and S. Thompson scored, while Raines reached third base on the play. Freshman first baseman/outfielder Kassidy Garvey capped the rally with an RBI single to grow CU's lead to 4-0.

Glenville State responded by scoring three runs in the top of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 4-3.

With two outs in the bottom of the frame, Fulk singled through the middle of the infield. The next batter, L. Thompson singled through the right side to advance Fulk up to third base. On the throw back into the infield, L. Thompson got caught in a rundown between first and second base that allowed Fulk to score and make it a 5-3 game.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Stacy reached on an error for the third time in the game, then stole second base. S. Thompson laced a pitch into center field that was misplayed and rolled to the wall. Not only did Stacy score on the play, but Thompson circled the bases and scored herself to make it a 7-3 Mountain Lion lead.

Offensively, Raines batted 2-for-3 with two RBI. L. Thompson, S. Thompson, and Garvey all had one RBI each in the game.

In the circle, freshman pitcher/infielder Rachael Koller (4-11) was the winning pitcher. While going the distance, Koller struck out seven batters while allowing three earned runs.

CU travels to West Liberty, West Virginia to face the Hilltoppers in a MEC doubleheader Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
