Concord Falls in Road Games Against Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team dropped a pair of games to Glenville State, 6-5 and 3-2, Wednesday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at the Sue Morris Sports Complex.

Game 1: Glenville State 6 – Concord 5
Trailing 6-1 in the seventh inning, CU (15-29, 8-16 MEC) scored four times in its final at-bat, but stranded the go-ahead run in scoring position to end the game.

Back-to-back walks with one out issued to senior outfielder Laura Thompson and freshman third baseman Kylee Stacy started the rally for the Mountain Lions. After the second out was recorded, freshman infielder Courtney Raines trimmed the deficit to 6-2 with an RBI single. Junior catcher/outfielder Jolie Privett's double scored Stacy.

The scoring continued as freshman first baseman/outfielder Kassidy Garvey's single scraped the wall and brought in two runs to get CU within 6-5. However, Glenville State got the final out of the game to edge CU.

GSU (14-21, 10-13 MEC) scored five runs in the first inning to race out to an early lead.

Freshman pitcher/infielder Rachel Koller tallied three hits in the contest. Garvey drove in two runs. Senior outfielder/pitcher Laura Thompson did not record a hit, but scored twice as she walked four times in the contest.

Freshman pitcher/first baseman Caitlyn Bauer (9-11) allowed five earned runs over four innings as she recorded two strikeouts.

Game 2: Glenville State 3 – Concord 2
GSU broke through with two runs in the bottom of the sixth after Koller and Madison Thimmes of Glenville State dueled over the first five innings.

The Pioneers put two runners with one out in the sixth. It appeared Koller was going to escape with the game still tied after inducing an infield pop-up for the second out. However, with the bases loaded, Glenville State plated a pair of runs on a two-out single to left center field.

Concord rallied in the seventh as it pushed the go-ahead run into scoring position. With one out, Koller and senior catcher/utility Mikayah Pulliam notched consecutive singles to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. A sacrifice bunt by freshman utility Delaney Fulk was misplayed and allowed pinch runner and freshman second baseman/shortstop Kayla McCraw to race in. Fulk, the go-ahead run, moved into scoring position on the play.

But, Glenville State was able to escape with the one-run win after back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

GSU opened the scoring in game two with a run in the bottom of the first, but Koller limited the scoring by stranding the bases loaded. The Mountain Lions responded with a score in the top of the third as three straight infield singles loaded the bases. Fulk hustled in on an RBI groundout to tie the game at 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth.

Koller (6-14) allowed three earned runs and picked up a strikeout over six innings in the circle.

Six different CU players accounted for hits with Fulk going 1-for-2 and a run scored. Koller was 1-for-2 with a walk.

The Mountain Lions welcome Alderson Broaddus to Athens for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
