INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team was defeated by West Virginia State in both games of its Mountain East Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Lady Jackets Field.
Game 1: West Virginia State 4 – Concord 3
Concord (8-22, 0-10 MEC) made a late surge to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh. However, West Virginia State (12-10, 9-1 MEC) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off the Mountain Lions.
Down 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning, freshman third baseman
Kylee Stacy walked and stole second. Senior third baseman/outfielder
Sarah Thompson singled up the middle to score Stacy and make it a one-run game.
Still down 2-1 in the top of the seventh inning, Stacy worked her second walk of the game. Thompson hit a double to right center that advanced Stacy to third base. Junior catcher/outfielder
Jolie Privett singled to center to score Stacy and advance Thompson to third. Freshman shortstop/utility player
Courtney Raines then hit a sacrifice fly to score Thompson and give Concord a 3-2 lead.
At the plate, Thompson was 4-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Privett tallied two hits and one RBI in the game.

Rachael Koller (3-11) was the losing pitcher, tallying four strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
Game 2: West Virginia State 6 - Concord 5
Concord took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but West Virginia State plated two runs in the bottom of the inning to win the game.
Down 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning, freshman utility player
Delaney Fulk led off the inning with a walk. Fifth-year senior outfielder
Hanna Hylton reached on an error, while Fulk advanced to third base. Freshman shortstop/second baseman
Kayla McCraw came in to pinch run for Hylton. Fulk scored on a groundout while McCraw raced around the bases to reach third. Senior pitcher/outfielder
Laura Thompson doubled to score McCraw and give Concord a 2-1 lead.
Tied 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning, Privett reached first base on an error and Raines walked. A wild pitch allowed both runners to advance one base and into scoring position. Koller doubled to left field to score both runners and give Concord a 4-2 lead.
WVSU tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the top of the seventh, Privett reached first on a fielder's choice and was pinch ran for by sophomore outfielder
Imani Campbell. Raines singled to right and allowed Campbell to reach third base. Koller hit a sacrifice fly to score Campbell and give Concord a 5-4 lead.
Offensively, L. Thompson and Raines recorded two hits each. Koller drove in three runs in the game.
Freshman pitcher/first baseman
Caitlyn Bauer struck out seven batters in six innings. L. Thompson (0-2) was the losing pitcher in her relief outing.
Concord travels to Charleston, West Virginia Sunday at 1:00 p.m. to play Charleston in a MEC doubleheader at UC Softball Field.
