FROSTBURG, Md. – The Concord University baseball team split two games with Frostburg State in Mountain East Conference action at Bob Wells Field Saturday afternoon, winning 7-5 before losing 7-2.
The Mountain Lions are now 17-8-1 overall and 7-3 versus the MEC. Frostburg State is 18-5 overall and 8-2 after Saturday.
Game 1: Concord 7 – Frostburg State 5
CU used a three-run second inning to separate itself from the Bobcats as it held off a late rally from FSU.
Both teams scored a pair of runs in the first inning as sophomore infielder
Zack Saryeldin came in a wild pitch before sophomore catcher/infielder
Chris Satcher doubled with two outs to plate sophomore infielder
Michael Dupont.
Three straight runners reached with one out in the second as junior outfielder
Josh Adkins scored on a passed ball before fifth-year senior outfielder
Brandon Bayne and Saryeldin raced home on a costly Frostburg State error with two outs.
Hanging onto a 5-3 edge in the fifth, back-to-back walks ignited a Concord rally in the frame. Adkins' two-run single scored freshman catcher
Joey Duffer and freshman infielder/pitcher
MJ Hunter.
Frostburg State started the sixth with a single and double, but the scoring was minimized as the Bobcats could only score on a groundout and sacrifice fly. Sophomore pitcher
Andrew Neff finished his afternoon by striking out the final batter he faced to close up the sixth.
Neff (5-2) tossed six innings as he recorded four strikeouts while allowing five runs on six hits. Fifth-year senior infielder
Anthony Stehlin retired the side in order in the seventh for his fourth save of the year.
Satcher was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Adkins and Saryeldin were both 2-for-3.
Game 2: Frostburg State 7 – Concord 2
The Mountain Lion bats were quieted by FSU's Will Grove as the Bobcats scored the first seven runs of the game.
Grove held Concord without a hit through six innings.
A leadoff double from Satcher in the seventh jumpstarted a CU rally. Two batters later, Adkins followed with an opposite field double to left before he scored on a two-out single by junior infielder
Juan Fortique. However, it was as close as the Mountain Lions would get in the comeback bid.
Fifth-year senior pitcher
Dan Nicholls struck out five over six innings as he allowed seven runs.
CU travels to Fairmont State 1:00 p.m. Sunday for a doubleheader. The games will be played at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex in Bridgeport, West Virginia.
