NUTTER FORT, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team dropped an 11-2 decision to Salem Friday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Frank Loria Field.
With the final outcome still hanging in the balance, Salem (4-13) plated eight runs in the seventh to take an 11-1 lead.
Early on, Concord (8-4-1) freshman pitcher/infielder
Jacob Nester and Salem's Jaryd Lund quieted both offenses with the Tigers scratching across a run in the third on an RBI groundout. Lund was able to keep CU off the scoreboard until the top of the seventh when freshman catcher
Joey Duffer's sacrifice fly brought in junior outfielder
Kyle Keenan after his leadoff triple.
Trailing 3-1, the Mountain Lions put the tying run on base in the seventh as sophomore infielder
Zack Saryeldin was hit by a pitch. However, Lund was able to escape the jam and keep the two-run lead intact.
SU needed just four hits to score the eight runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Freshman infielder
AJ Strickland had an RBI single in the ninth as a pinch hitter. Keenan and junior infielder
Daniel Layne accounted for two hits each.
Nester (0-1) went six-plus innings as he allowed six earned runs and struck out three.
The Mountain Lions travel to Emory & Henry 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.
