Concord Strikes First in 8-4 Win at Bluefield State

BLUEFIELD, Va. – The Concord University baseball team scored the first six runs of the game as it picked up an 8-4 win over Bluefield State Sunday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Bowen Field.

After going down in order in the first two innings of the game—and on the verge of being retired in order in the third—junior outfielder Josh Adkins draew a two-out walk to extend the frame. Sophomore infielder Zack Saryeldin followed with his second home run of the season to push Concord up 2-0.

CU (2-2-1) pushed across four runs in the fourth.

With the bases loaded, sophomore infielder Chris Satcher brought in a pair of runs including junior infielder Juan Fortique who led off the frame with a double. The rally was extended for Adkins to snatch a two-RBI single.

Bluefield State (6-8) answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, and added a third run in the sixth.

The greatest threat to the Mountain Lions' edge came in the seventh when the Big Blues loaded the bases. However, the final batter that sophomore pitcher Eddie Blake faced grounded out to Satcher to end the scoring chance.

Concord pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the eighth as Saryeldin tallied his third RBI of the day, and junior outfielder Kyle Keenan scored on a wild pitch.

On in relief of Blake, freshman pitcher/infielder Rylee Nicholas loaded the bases, but was able to escape with a strikeout to keep the margin at five runs.

Saryeldin finished the day with three hits and three RBI. Thanks in part to the fourth-inning rally, Adkins and Satcher each had two RBI. Freshman catcher Joey Duffer recorded two hits.

Blake (1-0) struck out three and scattered three runs on eight hits over seven innings. Nicholas tossed the final two innings as he tallied three strikeouts.

The Mountain Lions continue a busy stretch of games when they host UVa.-Wise 12:00 p.m. Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader at Anderson Field.
