FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior guard
Jaisah Smith scored four points in the final 20 seconds of regulation to force overtime, helping the Concord University women's basketball team to a 74-63 overtime win over Frostburg State Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference contest at Bobcat Arena.
Down 58-56 with 37 seconds left in the fourth, the Mountain Lions (3-6, 2-4 MEC) used a patient offensive set to get Smith open for a foul line jumper with 17 seconds remaining. On the following possession, Frostburg State (2-8, 1-5 MEC) got its own made jumper with four seconds left.
But, the Bobcats left enough time for Smith to drive down the left baseline for a layup right before the fourth-quarter horn.
CU scored the first eight points of overtime and never looked back in the 11-point win.
Concord had to erase a larger deficit before the fourth quarter. Trailing 33-25 at halftime, the Maroon and Gray began the third quarter on an 11-2 run to go up 36-35 four minutes into the second half. Senior guard
Ashton Funderburg began the run with a three-pointer before freshman forward
Abbie Smith made consecutive buckets.
Frostburg State stemmed the tide as it tied the game at 38-38, but a layup from junior forward
Kyndra Pilant at the 3:36 mark of the third gave a CU a lead, 40-38, it did not relinquish until there were less than three minutes remaining in the fourth.
J. Smith dropped in 16 points with 10 coming in the fourth quarter and overtime. The Bluefield, West Virginia native also added a team-best seven rebounds. A. Smith netted 13 points, including 5-of-6 at the foul line. Funderburg scored seven of her nine points after halftime while fellow senior guard
Jazz Blankenship added nine points.
The Mountain Lions limited Frostburg State to 30.4 percent shooting for the game, including holding FSU to below 30 percent in the middle two quarters. CU hit on 78.6 percent of its free throws (22-for-28).
Concord will be off for Christmas break until January 2 when it travels for a non-conference matchup at Emory & Henry.
