Concord Loses in MEC Quarterfinals to Charleston

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team was eliminated from the Mountain East Conference Tournament Tuesday afternoon in the quarterfinal round by Charleston, 2-1, at the YMCA Cline Complex.

Charleston (10-9) used two goals from Sydney Cavender—one on a set piece—in the first half to take a 2-0 lead at halftime. The goals came in the 25th and 38th minutes.

The Golden Eagles held a 6-4 edge in shots at halftime as Concord's (12-5-2) best chance came from graduate forward Leah Foster in the 11th minute on a 1 vs. 1 opportunity, but she was turned away.

The Mountain Lions caught a break in the 51st minute when UC goalkeeper Jordan Maynard was sent off on a red card on a challenge outside the penalty box. Despite being a man down, UC held Concord without a shot until a heading attempt by sophomore midfielder Anna Davis in the 67th minute.

Redshirt freshman midfielder Reeanna Cook had a shot saved in the 82nd minute, but the Mountain Lions were able to break through in the 84th minute.

Senior defender Zoe Belding was taken down in the penalty box to earn a PK for CU. Cook stepped up and converted her fourth goal of the season to trim the deficit in half. However, the Mountain Lions were unable to get a shot off over the final six minutes.

Charleston held a 10-7 edge in shots. All three of Cook's shots were on goal.

Graduate goalkeeper Leah Marsh made two saves in the game.

CU has been in contention for an NCAA Tournament berth throughout the season, and will have to wait until Monday night to see if it has been selected.
