Concord Defeated at West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team lost in three sets to West Virginia Wesleyan, 25-20, 25-19, 25-23, Tuesday night in a Mountain East Conference match at the Rockefeller Center.

Set 1
With both teams trying to string together a run, it was Wesleyan (7-20, 3-10 MEC) that went on a 6-0 spurt before the midpoint of the set to open up a 16-11 lead. The Mountain Lions (6-23, 0-13 MEC) traded points with WVWC, but never got closer than two points, 22-20, for the remainder of the game.

Set 2
Similar to the opening set, it was a Bobcats' scoring run that forced Concord into a six-point deficit. CU scored consecutive points on Wesleyan errors to get within 13-12, but WVWC rattled off the next five points to go up 18-12. The Mountain Lions cut the deficit to 21-18 after a kill from sophomore outside hitter Gracie Brackney, however, Wesleyan held off CU.

Set 3
A late Concord surge came up short as the Bobcats won the set. Trailing by as many as nine points, 19-10, in the game, the Mountain Lions ripped off a 12-3 run to tie the set at 22-22. Brackney was responsible for two points, a kill and a service ace, but it was six WVWC errors that allowed Concord to creep back in. A seventh Wesleyan error gave Concord a 23-22 edge. Wesleyan scored the final three points of the match to win.

Match Stats
Brackney had her second straight double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Hannah Steele chipped in 10 kills. Freshman setter Kenzee Chaffin tallied 26 assists and eight digs.

Concord hosts Davis & Elkins 7:00 p.m. Friday night at the Carter Center. Prior to the match, middle hitter Amber Hall will be honored on Senior Night.
