PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team used a season-high four goals to get past Alderson Broaddus, 4-3, Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference clash at Multi-Sport Performance Stadium.
With just two goals in the first half—and the game tied at 1-1 after 45 minutes—action picked up in the second half.
Junior midfielder
Ricardo Chinea-Pegler scored the first of his two goals in the 62
nd minute as Concord regained a 2-1 edge after leading 1-0 after a seventh minute goal from senior midfielder
Michael Shelor. Chinea-Pegler assisted on Shelor's score while Shelor was credited with the assist on Chinea-Pegler's goal.
Fifth-year senior
Daniel Culverwell came off the bench to add to the CU lead in the 66
th minute as his first goal of the season pushed the advantage to 3-1. Eight minutes later, Chinea-Pegler put the finishing touches on his first career brace with an unassisted goal.
Up by their largest margin of the season, the Mountain Lions had to withstand a late Alderson Broaddus surge. The Battlers trimmed the Concord lead to 4-2 in the 85 minute, and just 52 seconds later had the margin down to 4-3.
AB got one final chance in the 88
th minute, but the shot was lifted high as the Maroon and Gray held on for their second straight road win.
Over the last two games, Chinea-Pegler has eight points.
Concord owned a 20-14 edge in total shots in the game and had a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams took four corner kicks in the contest.
Freshman goalkeeper
Tommy Smith made four saves.
The Mountain Lions face Notre Dame in the final home game of the season 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the YMCA Cline Complex in Beckley.
