ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Fairmont State Tuesday night in Mountain East Conference action at the Carter Center.
The game scores were 25-15, 25-15, 25-21.
Set 1
An early deficit was too much for CU (6-17, 0-8 MEC) to overcome as it fell behind 14-4. A 4-0 run with consecutive kills from junior middle hitter
Kyndra Pilant as well as a kill from sophomore outside hitter
Gracie Brackney got the deficit to 23-15, but Fairmont State (21-2, 7-1 MEC) closed out the game.
Set 2
The Mountain Lions battled in the early stages of the game as a kill from senior middle hitter
Amber Hall and a ball handling error by the Fighting Falcons made the score 6-5 FSU. However, the Fighting Falcons rattled off an 8-0 run to separate from Concord. Three straight points reduced the FSU lead to 18-11, but it was as close as CU would get.
Set 3
A furious rally at the end of the game came up short as the Mountain Lions nearly came back from 23-12 down to force a fourth set. Trailing by 11, Concord ripped off six straight points. Junior setter
Kristin Lough capped the rally with back-to-back service aces. The momentum continued as CU found itself down 24-21 after a Pilant kill and a Fairmont State error. But, a kill ended the match.
Match Stats
Pilant racked up a match-best 11 kills to go with nine digs. Steele added six kills and nine digs. Lough tallied 16 assists. Graduate defensive specialist
Kelli Ellison had 12 digs.
The Mountain Lions begin a three-match road trip when they visit Mercer County rival Bluefield State 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
