Concord Earns 70-56 Road Win Against UVa.-Wise

WISE, Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team defeated UVa.-Wise, 70-56, Monday night in a non-conference contest at the Prior Center.

A 22-point second quarter propelled Concord to a 13-point halftime advantage, 37-24. An 11-5 close to the second quarter marked for CU marked a turning point in the game as junior guard Jazz Blankenship buried one of her four first-half three-pointers to push the lead to 13 points—the Maroon and Gray never allowed UVa.-Wise to get the lead back under 10 for the remainder of the game.

The Cavaliers go within 11 points three times in the third quarter, but back-to-back layups from Blankenship and senior guard Gracie Robinson at the 5:33 mark of the third quarter pushed the advantage back out to 15 points, 48-33.

The lead swelled to as much as 23 points at the 7:39 mark of the fourth quarter before the Mountain Lions settled for a 14-point victory. Concord shot 50 percent (13-for-26) in the middle two quarters to aid the win.

Blankenship tallied 25 points with 17 points coming in the first half. She finished the game shooting 7-of-11 from the field, 4-of-6 from three-point distance and 7-of-7 at the foul line. Fitzwater added 17 points and 13 rebounds to tally her ninth double-double of the season.

CU notched 21 assists on 26 field goals with senior guard Maggie Guynn and sophomore guard Maddie Ratcliff leading the way the with Guynn tying her career high of seven. Ratcliff pitched in five assists to go with eight points.

The defensive minded Mountain Lions limited UVa.-Wise to 29.4 percent shooting on the night. CU also outrebounded the Cavaliers by six, 47-41. On the defensive end, CU tallied a season-best 10 blocks with Fitzwater notching six and junior forward Alexis Phillips adding two more.

The Mountain Lions return to the Carter Center 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to host West Virginia Wesleyan.
