Concord Hosts WVU Tech in Home Opener

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team welcomes WVU Tech to the Carter Center for the home opener 7:00 p.m. Tuesday night in a non-conference clash.

RECORDS
The only match of the season for CU so far was a five-set loss to WVU Tech.
The Golden Bears have lost two matches since playing Concord and sit at 4-8 overall.

GOING THE DISTANCE
Thursday's matchup at WVU Tech required all five sets as the Mountain Lions were unable to hang on to a 2-0 games lead in the match. Dating back to last season, Concord has had three of its last six matches go to five sets including a home win over Glenville State to end the spring season. Senior Sheridan Herron is averaging 2.6 kills per set in her last three five-set matches, including notching 12 on Thursday to go with a .269 hitting percentage. Senior setter Imani Rodgers is averaging 5.9 assists per set in the last three five-set matches.

COMING OUT STRONG
Freshman outside hitter Hannah Steele delivered a team-best 14 kills at WVU Tech Thursday night to go with a hitting percentage of .310. Steele's 14 kills were the most in a collegiate debut during head coach Kate Southcott's 13-year tenure at Concord. The Mountain Lions combined to hit .173 as a team, outhitting WVU Tech .173-.109. It was the highest hitting percentage in a season opener for CU since clubbing .295 to start the 2016 season in a win over Dominican. Junior middle hitter Amber Hall hit .333. Following Herron and Steele was senior right side Peyton Wiseman hitting .211 on the night with six kills.

WVU TECH AT A GLANCE
After playing a five-set match with Concord, the Golden Bears turned around and played another maximum-set match with Montreat Friday night, losing 15-12 in the fifth. After 13 kills against CU, Ana Ruiz Rocandio followed it up with 20 combined kills in the matches against Montreat and Kaiser. Though WVUT was outhit by nearly 75 percentage points against Concord, the Golden Bears had seven more kills than CU last week, 58-51.
