ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team swept a doubleheader from Davis & Elkins, 5-3 and 9-0, on Senior Day at the CU Softball Field in Mountain East Conference play.
Game 1: Concord 5 – Davis & Elkins 3
Junior pitcher/outfielder
Laura Thompson won her fourth straight start in the circle while giving herself some run support in game one.
D&E (11-21, 11-21 MEC) was able to get on the board with a two-out solo home run in the first inning, but from there Thompson retired 16 straight to allow the Concord (17-19, 17-13 MEC) bats to get hot.
The Mountain Lions scored two runs on just one hit in the bottom of the first as senior catcher/third baseman
Lauren Richardson was hit with the bases loaded, and sophomore catcher/outfielder
Jolie Privett followed by drawing a bases-loaded walk.
Concord loaded the bases again in the third, but was unable to add to its lead. However, in the fourth Privett dropped a two-out single into left field to plate Thompson, pushing the advantage to 3-1.
Two of the first three batters found their way aboard to start the fifth as Thompson strided to the plate and doubled to the left center gap to bring in two runs.
Cruising into the seventh inning with 16 straight retired, Thompson issued a leadoff walk as the Senators got a two-run double later in the frame to bring the tying run to the plate with no outs. Thompson responded by retiring the final three batters consecutively and ending the game.
Thompson (8-8) gave up three runs on four hits and struck out three. At the plate, she finished 3-for-3 with two RBI, two runs scored and a walk.
Privett and junior third baseman/outfielder
Sarah Thompson each had two hits with Privett adding two RBI. Senior utility
Jenna Witt did not have an at-bat as she drew four walks in the game. Richardson was hit three times in the contest.
Game 2: Concord 9 – Davis & Elkins 0 (Five Innings)
The Mountain Lions gave senior pitcher/outfielder
Cartney Schoolcraft plenty of run support as the Winfield, West Virginia native tossed her second straight shutout.
The Thompson sisters each had extra-base hits to start the game as S. Thompson's double plated L. Thompson who had a leadoff triple. Richardson scored S. Thompson on a sacrifice fly before senior outfielder/pitcher
Darby Fitzpatrick came up with a two-out single to get Witt home, and push CU out to a 3-0 lead.
S. Thompson had her second RBI double in the second as part of a three-run inning. Richardson provided her first career triple to plate a run in the rally as well.
The Concord bats were quieted briefly before another three-run frame, this time in the fourth. Richardson brought in her third run of the game with an RBI single. Witt scored during the next at-bat on a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 8-0. Fitzpatrick followed with her second run-scoring hit of the afternoon.
With ample run support, Schoolcraft (6-8) eased her way through five innings as she retired the D&E lineup in order the first time through before a leadoff single in the fourth. Schoolcraft struck out six—including fanning the side in the third—while allowing two hits.
