Concord Runs Win Streak to Six Games with Saturday Sweep of Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team pushed its winning streak to six games as it completed a doubleheader sweep of Davis & Elkins, 11-3 and 12-3, Saturday afternoon at Joni Smith Field in a pair of Mountain East Conference games.

Game 1: Concord 11 – Davis & Elkins 3 (Five Innings)
CU (7-9, 5-3 MEC) used two grand slams in the early innings to make quick of Davis & Elkins (4-4, 4-4 MEC).

Neither team got on the board in the first inning, but the Mountain Lions used a five-run second inning to take control of the contest. With a run already in on a sacrifice fly, and the bases loaded for junior third baseman/outfielder Sarah Thompson, she hit a grand slam—the first of her career to push the lead to 5-0.

In a two-run fourth inning, Thompson was in the middle of the action again as her one-out double scored freshman utility Alyssa Bernarndini. Thompson came in to score later in the frame on a sacrifice fly.

Three consecutive singles started the top of the fifth inning to set the stage for junior first baseman Tiara Peters to launch her own grand slam, giving Concord an 11-1 lead.

D&E plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but CU prevented any more runs on its way to five-inning victory.

Senior outfielder/pitcher Darby Fitzpatrick, Peters and Thompson all had two hits while Peters and Thompson combined for nine RBI

The 11 runs were more than enough for junior pitcher/outfielder Laura Thompson (2-4) who struck out five and scattered eight hits over five innings.
Game 2: Concord 12 – Davis & Elkins 3
Concord jumped out to a 6-1 lead after four innings and cruised to a nine-run victory as it recorded a single-game program record 22 hits.

Freshman utility Madeline Shore was responsible for two of the three runs in the first inning as her double scored a pair.

The Mountain Lions' lead was extended by senior catcher/utility Kaitlyn Stewart—in the start of a big game two for her—in the third inning as she singled in a run.

Two more runs crossed on the first home run of the season by sophomore catcher/outfielder Jolie Privett in the fourth inning to give CU a 6-1 edge.

The Senator climbed to within 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth, and later had the tying run at the plate in the frame, but senior pitcher/outfielder Cartney Schoolcraft recorded one of her six strikeouts in the game to escape the inning.

Concord got a run in the top of the sixth, and five more in the seventh to ease its way to the win. Included in the seventh-inning rally was a solo home run by Stewart to lead off the frame, and a two-run single by Fitzpatrick.

Eight different players had at least two hits in the game. Fitzpatrick led the way with her first career four-hit game to go with three RBI. Stewart and senior utility Jenna Witt each had three hits.

Schoolcraft (2-2) pitched five innings as she allowed three runs on six hits to go with the aforementioned six strikeouts.

Concord welcomes MEC rival Charleston to Athens 2:00 p.m. Thursday.
