Concord Falls at West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team lost a doubleheader to West Virginia State, 4-3 and 3-0, Sunday afternoon at the Lady Jackets Field in Mountain East Conference play.

Game 1: West Virginia State 4 – Concord 3
WVSU (7-5, 4-0 MEC) scored three runs in its final two at-bats to rally after Concord (1-9, 1-3 MEC) built a 3-1 lead.

West Virginia State scored the first run of the game in the first inning, but the Mountain Lions answered with a run in the fourth as CU loaded bases for junior first baseman Tiara Peters who beat out an infield single to plate senior utility Jenna Witt who started the rally with a one-out single.

Concord scored two more runs in the fifth inning.

Senior outfielder Dani Bloomingdale and junior pitcher/outfielder Laura Thompson reached base to start the inning before advancing 60 feet on a deep fly ball. With the runners in scoring position, sophomore catcher/outfielder Jolie Privett lined a sharp hit that WVSU's shortstop was unable to handle as a pair of runs came across.

West Virginia State got a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to draw within 3-2, and won in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run home run.

Peters had two hits in the contest while Privett drove in two runs.

Thompson struck out three in 6.2 inning while allowing four runs.

Game 2: West Virginia State 3 – Concord 0
The nightcap turned into an early pitching duel between senior pitcher/outfielder Cartney Schoolcraft and WVSU's Autumn Thompson.

The first batter to reach for either team was a leadoff walk for freshman utility Alyssa Bernardini in the top of the third. Schoolcraft retired 12 of the first 13 batters she faced to keep the Yellow Jackets' offense quiet.

West Virginia State was able to scratch across a run in the fifth and added two more runs in the sixth inning.

Privett and junior third baseman/outfielder Sarah Thompson each had a hit for Concord.

Schoolcraft struck out five batters over six innings as she allowed three runs.

The Mountain Lions welcome Bluefield State for the home opener at the CU Softball Field 1:00 p.m. Wednesday.
