WHEELING, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team outlasted Wheeling, 1-0, in double overtime Friday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference matchup at Bishop Schmitt Field.
The game-winning goal in the 106
th minute came from senior midfielder
Samuel Appiah who scored off of a corner kick from senior midfielder
Adrian Cabello.
After the Cardinals (0-5) let a clearance get away over the end line, Cabello sent the ensuing corner kick into the far side of the box where Appiah was waiting to head the ball in on a bounce back across the goal mouth for the game's lone score.
Initially, it appeared as if Wheeling cleared the ball before it crossed the goal line, but the far side line judge ruled a good goal.
Concord (2-2) won its second straight 1-0 game after defeating Frostburg State March 5.
The Mountain Lions were outshot in the game, 18-6, and Appiah had just one of two shots on goal in the contest—along with sophomore midfielder
Michael Shelor recording a shot on target in the first half.
Freshman goalkeeper
Sean Monro made four of his six saves in the first half to preserve his second shutout in his second career start.
Monro has now recorded 226 consecutive minutes of scoreless soccer along with the help of his defense of freshmen
Sacha Everard and
Vinay Gadde and sophomores
Daniel Haworth and
Jesse Kannekens.
Concord returns home to host West Liberty 4:00 p.m. March 26 at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex in Beckley, West Virginia
