RECORDS
Concord is 1-2 this season after a 1-0 victory over Frostburg State March 5.
Wheeling is 0-4 in the spring with two losses coming by one goal.
DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE
The Mountain Lions recorded their first shutout since September 11, 2019 against West Liberty as they earned the clean sheet against Frostburg State in the home victory two weeks ago. CU's four defenders of freshman
Sacha Everard, freshman
Vinay Gadde and sophomores
Daniel Haworth and
Jesse Kannekens limited Frostburg State to three shots on goals which were all saved by freshman goalkeeper
Sean Monro. Everard was responsible for Concord's goal against FSU which was the first time a CU defender has scored since Bruno Baptista netted a goal against West Virginia Wesleyan October 20, 2019.
GOING NORTH
Concord visits West Virginia's northern panhandle Friday afternoon. Concord has found success in Ohio County—where both Wheeling and West Liberty are located. The Mountain Lions are 3-2 in their last five games in the county, dating back to the fall of 2017. CU has gone 1-1 each of the last two seasons against WU and WLU on the road, and picked up a 1-0 win at Wheeling September 30, 2017. Sophomore midfielder
Michael Shelor scored one of two goals against West Liberty last season on the road. At Wheeling, the Cardinals edged CU, 2-1, with both finishing with 11 shots in the game. Two seasons ago on the road against WU, the Mountain Lions were involved in a high-scoring 5-3 loss as all eight goals came within the first 62 minutes of the game.
COMEBACK KIDS
CU came up with a 2-1 victory in the second meeting of 2019 with Wheeling as it erased a 1-0 halftime deficit. Sophomore midfielder
Ben Greear assisted on a goal in the 56
th minute to help Concord draw even. Six minutes later, fellow sophomore midfielder
Samuel Appiah netted the lone goal of his freshman season as the Mountain Lions held off Wheeling in a game that featured 31 total shots. The halftime deficit that Concord was able to overcome was the first time the Mountain Lions trailed at halftime, but went on to win since October 14, 2018.
WHEELING AT A GLANCE
The Cardinals will play just their second game at home when they welcome CU on Friday. Wheeling dropped a double overtime contest to rival West Liberty, 2-1, last week. WU also opened the season by falling 2-1 to West Virginia Wesleyan. Three different players—Cesar Coello, Miguel Martin and Simen Moksnes have accounted for the three Wheeling goals this season. Jim Regan, the most tenured coach in the MEC, is in his 36
th season as the head coach of the Cardinals' program.
