BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team was unable to hang onto a 36-27 halftime lead as it lost 67-56 to West Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday night in a Mountain East Conference contest at the Rockefeller Center.
The Mountain Lions (8-6) ran out to a 20-15 lead after 10 minutes on the strength of shooting 61.5 percent from the floor. Concord extended the lead to nine points at halftime as it limited WVWC (4-10) to 32.4 percent in the first half.
Concord and Wesleyan traded scores in the early stages of the third quarter, and CU was still up by 11 points, 41-30, after senior guard
Keely Lundy hit a three-pointer at the 7:54 mark of the period.
However, the Bobcats finished the third on a 13-2 run to tie the contest at 43-43 going to the fourth quarter.
WVWC took a 50-47 lead, but freshman guard
Maddie Ratcliff responded with a three-pointer on Concord's next possession to tie the game with 6:53 remaining. Wesleyan, though, was able to score the next four points, and the teams traded buckets with CU closing the deficit to two points two different times.
The Bobcats went up 60-54 with 60 seconds left, and kept Concord at bay in the closing moments of the contest.
Fitzwater finished contest with 22 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, to go with nine rebounds. The only other double-figure scorer in the contest was junior guard
Maggie Guynn who chipped in 11 points.
Senior forward
Tamra Scott had four points and eight rebounds off the bench. Junior guard
Gracie Robinson had three points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The Mountain Lions welcome nationally-ranked Glenville State to the Carter Center 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
