ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team lost in four sets to West Virginia State, 26-24, 15-25, 17-25, 16-25, Tuesday night in a Mountain East Conference match at the Carter Center.
Concord drops to 0-4 with the defeat while West Virginia State improves to 5-1 in 2021.
Set 1
The Mountain Lions were unfazed by a 12-6 statr to the match by West Virginia State. Concord slowly ate into the lead to tie the set at 15-15 after a service ace from senior outside hitter
Kirsti Pouncy. After the Yellow Jackets went back up 18-16, CU took a 20-19 lead with back-to-back kills from sophomore outside hitter
Hailey Buchanan. Facing a deficit of 24-22, Pouncy chipped in two kills while junior setter
Imani Rodgers had a kill and a service ace as CU took the first game.
Set 2
Junior right side
Peyton Wiseman gave Concord a 10-9 lead early in the second game, but West Virginia State scored five straight points to go up 14-10. The Yellow Jackets were able to maintain a lead of at least four points throughout the remainder of the set.
Set 3
WVSU ran out to leads of 12-7 and 17-8 in a crucial third game. Pouncy had a kill to get the Mountain Lions within 21-14, but West Virginia State was able to hold off a Concord rally.
Set 4
WVSU led early in the fourth game, but Concord was able to get back within 9-8 after a service error from the Yellow Jackets. However, West Virginia State rattled off six consecutive points to separate itself from CU. WVSU led by at least six points for the remainder of the set and match.

Amber Hall and Pouncy each had seven kills while Buchanan and Wiseman each tallied six kills. Freshman setter
Kristin Lough recorded 18 assists. Senior defensive specialist
Lindsay Maddox notched 17 digs.
Concord hit .241 in the second set, and .144 overall.
The Mountain Lions play two matches at Charleston starting at 5:00 p.m. Thursday.
