BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team lost 7-0 to nationally-ranked number five Charleston Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at the Cline Complex.
Sunday was the final game in the 31-year coaching tenure of head coach
Steve Barrett who announced his retirement from the men's soccer program earlier in the week.
"To realize the impact I've had on young men and some of the messages I received have been unbelievable," Barrett said after the game. "I've always said that wins and losses don't define me, it's all about what I get to do on a day-to-day basis and the people I've met. I just hope I've been able to have an impact."
Barrett was at the helm of the men's soccer program from 1999-2002 and again from 2008 until Sunday. From 1999-2008, Barrett coached both the men's and women's soccer programs at Concord as he won a conference championship with the women's program in 2002.
"Steve has been a great asset to the athletic department for over 20 years and we will miss his leadership of the men's soccer program," Concord Director of Athletics
Kevin Garrett said. "We wish Steve and his family all the best and hope he enjoys retirement."
As for the game on Sunday, Charleston (15-1-1, 14-1-1 MEC) scored three times in the first 10 minutes before it added four second-half goals.
Sophomore midfielder
Michael Shelor tallied a first-half shot for the Mountain Lions (2-16, 2-14 MEC). Fifth-year senior goalkeeper
Kyle Brown recorded 11 saves as he concluded his career Sunday with 342 career stops.
