Concord Falters at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University men's basketball team dropped a 94-74 decision to Charleston Saturday afternoon in the Mountain East Conference opener inside the Wehrle Center.

The Mountain Lions (1-3, 0-1 MEC) were forced to chase the lead as senior guard Brandon Kennedy hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 3-3, but UC (3-1, 1-0 MEC) answered with a 17-5 run to open up a 20-8 lead with 13:26 left in the first half.

Trailing by as much as 21 points in the opening half, Concord trimmed the deficit back to 15 points, 51-36, at halftime after Kennedy and fifth-year senior guard Matt Weir both hit triples in the final two minutes of the half.

Concord was able to work the lead down to nine points several different times in the second half, but was never able to trim it any closer. Sophomore forward Luken Hill hit a layup with 7:35 left to go to get the deficit to 75-66, but back-to-back Charleston buckets opened the lead back up to 13 points.

Weir tallied a career-best 22 points. Fifth-year senior forward Lual Daniel Rahama netted 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Junior guard Ethan Heller recorded 13 points.

The Mountain Lions will be part of the Gary Miller Classic hosted by Gannon during Thanksgiving Weekend. CU's first game will be 5:30 p.m. Friday against Saint Michael's in Erie, Pennsylvania.
