Concord Set to Face Mercyhurst in the NCAA Tournament

 The Concord University women's soccer team faces Mercyhurst in NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament, Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex.

Concord is 17-0-3 overall and 13-0-3 in conference play.

Mercyhurst is 14-5-1 overall and 12-3-1 in PSAC games.


BEEN HERE BEFORE
This is the second time the Mountain Lions have reached the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament in program history. The 2019 squad went 19-2 in the regular season and 13-1 against MEC teams. CU defeated Fairmont State in the MEC Championship game before advancing to the regional tournament, where they fell to West Chester 2-0. Thursday's meeting will be the first time Concord and Mercyhurst have faced each other since 2006. CU holds the series lead, 2-1.

TEAM EFFORT
Concord is going into regionals tied for second in Division II in scoring offense, with 69 total goals and a goals per game average of 3.45. CU is also tied for eighth in total assists with 50. Fifth-year midfielder Yasmin Mosby is showing why she won MEC Offensive Player of the Year honors. Mosby ranks second in Division II in total goals with 21. Mosby also ranks third in total points with 45. Junior forward Courtney Smith is currently ranked second in total assists with 16. Senior forward Leah Foster isn't far behind Smith, she is currently tied for ninth in total assists with ten.

Concord not only has a high-powered attack, but also a smothering defense. Concord is currently tied for fourth in Division II in shutout percentage with a per game average of .700 and a total of 14 shutouts this fall. The defense is led by fifth-year defender Morgan Carmichael and senior goalkeeper Leah Marsh. Carmichael won MEC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Marsh is 11th in Division II in goals against average (.448), only allowing nine goals this season.

THE BEST VERSUS THE BEST
CU will go up against a Mercyhurst defense that has only allowed 14 goals this season. The backline is Taryn Baxter, who is a first-team PSAC West selection. Concord has only been held to one goal or less three times. Since October 16th, a stretch of eight games, the Lakers have only allowed three goals. And for the season, MU only allows opponents to take 8.5 shots per game.

MERCYHURST AT A GLANCE
The Lakers defeated Edinboro in the PSAC Tournament Quarterfinals, 2-0. However, Mercyhurst was eliminated by Bloomsburg in the Semifinals, 2-0. The Lakers are led by forward Emily Mijares who leads the team in points (31) and goals (14). The Lakers' defense is led by goalkeeper Maddie Elbro. Elbro is tied for tenth in Division II in total shutouts with ten this season. She has started every game for the Lakers this fall. Elbro has a goals-against average of 0.68 and save percentage of 82.9 percent on 169 shots faced.
