Concord Pushes Past Winston-Salem State in Overtime, 78-75

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team came back from a fourth-quarter deficit to down Winston-Salem State in overtime Saturday at Joe Retton Arena in the MEC-PSAC Challenge.

Trailing 57-50 with just over eight minutes remaining in the game, the Mountain Lions (1-0) need seven of the final eight minutes in regulation to tie the game at 68-68 on a jumper by sophomore guard Maddie Ratcliff with 1:05 remaining.

Ratcliff had seven of the 18 points in the comeback while senior guard Gracie Robinson hit a key three-pointer in the rally.

After getting a defensive stop, Concord got the final look of regulation, but a three-pointer was off the mark and the game went to overtime.

The Mountain Lions scored seven of the first eight points of the extra session as senior guard Maggie Guynn's layup with 2:54 left put Concord up 75-69. Winston-Salem State (0-1) cut the margin back to 75-73 with 1:45 left, but Guynn made 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Tied after one quarter, 23-23, CU never trailed in the second quarter and had a lead as high as eight points before settling for a 38-34 halftime advantage. The Rams, though, made a late-third quarter run to take a 51-47 advantage to the fourth.

Guynn matched Winston-Salem State's Amaya Tucker for the game lead in scoring as Guynn poured in 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Fifth-year senior forward Riley Fitzwater posted 16 points and 19 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jaisah Smith matched Fitzwater in the scoring column while Ratcliff's late surge gave her 13 points in the game.

Concord shot 48.3 percent in the game (28-for-58) and added 19 points off 22 WSSU turnovers.

The Mountain Lions play Clarion 12:00 p.m. Sunday in the MEC-PSAC Challenge.
