Concord Downed by Charleston

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Charleston Tuesday night, 25-13, 25-22, 25-16, in Mountain East Conference play at the Carter Center.

Set 1
Trailing 10-5 in the opening game after a kill from senior outside hitter Sheridan Herron, Concord (3-8, 0-3 MEC) watched UC (10-5, 2-1 MEC) go on a 7-0 run to open up a 12-point advantage as it took the first set.

Set 2
On the strength of eight blocks in the middle game, the Mountain Lions battled Charleston as the set featured nine ties and six lead changes. Three of the first six points of the game for CU were on blocks as junior middle hitter Amber Hall, senior middle hitter Sheridan Herron and freshman outside hitter Hannah Steele combined to reject UC. Concord used a 5-1 run to take a 17-15 lead after a service ace from freshman defensive specialist Kaylee Spees. However, the Golden Eagles scored seven of the next eight points to gain a 22-18 edge on their way to a set win.

Set 3
Charleston bounced out to a 10-4 edge in the game, but the Mountain Lions hung tough and cut the deficit back to five points five times. However, CU was unable to get any closer as Charleston took the set.

Match Stats
Steele had a match-high 11 kills as she added eight digs, three service aces and two blocks. Herron chipped in four kills and five total blocks. Senior setter Imani Rodgers recorded 18 assists and eight digs. Senior defensive specialist Kelli Ellison notched 14 digs.

CU continues its home stand as Davis & Elkins visits the Carter Center 7:00 p.m. Friday.
