BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday evening at Culpepper Stadium in a Mountain East Conference game.
Concord (9-0-3, 7-0-3 MEC) started the match trailing early after conceding a Wesleyan goal from a corner kick in the 11
th minute. Both teams only had two shots each in the first half. Coming out of halftime, the Mountain Lions started the attack early. In the 53rd minute, junior forward
Courtney Smith had her shot saved by Wesleyan goalkeeper Ally Moore, however, fifth-year defender
Morgan Carmichael cleaned up the rebound and buried it into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
The Bobcats capitalized in the 68
th minute by scoring on a breakaway opportunity to regain a one-goal lead.
Concord answered, though, in the 84
th minute with a goal that was scored by fifth-year midfielder
Yasmin Mosby for her 13
th of the season. From a Wesleyan goal kick, Concord controlled possession. Mosby shot a bouncing shot towards the Bobcat net that hit off the left post and into the net for the tying goal. Concord outshot Wesleyan 12-2 in the second half of regulation.
In first overtime, Concord did not have a shot in the ten-minute period. Senior goalkeeper
Leah Marsh was able to make two big saves to keep the game tied through overtime. She finished the match with three saves total.
The Mountain Lions only had a small number of opportunities in second overtime. The first came in the 102
nd minute. What looked like a wide-open scoring opportunity for Concord was called back for being offsides.
The second opportunity arose when Smith had a shot taken in the 107
th minute that went wide of the net. That would be the only shot taken by either team in second overtime. Wesleyan had an opportunity late in the period where a cross into the box never found a Bobcat player, resulting in Concord being able to clear the ball away from danger.
CU will return to the YMCA Paul Cline Complex in Beckley, West Virginia Wednesday for a match against Davis & Elkins at 5:30 pm.
