ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team shot over 50 percent while holding Frostburg State to near 30 percent in a 76-53 win Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at the Carter Center.
After trailing throughout the majority of the first quarter, freshman guard
Maddie Ratcliff drained her only three-pointer of the game with 13 seconds remaining in the first quarter to give CU (4-3) a lead of 17-16—and Concord would only relinquish the lead once more in the contest.
Trailing Frostburg State (2-6), 24-23, with 5:33 left in the second quarter, the Mountain Lions finished the half on a 14-2 run. Senior guard
Keely Lundy scored all five of her points for the game during the burst while senior forward
Riley Fitzwater chipped in four points.
After outscoring the Bobcats 20-10 in the second, Concord used an 18-11 advantage in the third quarter to open up a 55-37 advantage after three quarters.
Frostburg State was able to trim the margin to 15 points at the 8:18 mark of the fourth quarter, but never got any closer as the Mountain Lions' lead reached 26 points, 71-45, after a Fitzwater old-school three-point play at the 3:28 mark of the fourth.
CU shot 52.7 percent (29-for-55) from the floor, a season best, while canning a season-high 12 three-pointers. Sophomore guard
Jazz Blankenship led the way from beyond the arc with four three-pointer as part of her career-high 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
Junior guards
Maggie Guynn and
Gracie Robinson each knocked down two triples.
Fitzwater led all scorers with 17 points to go with 10 rebounds and six blocks. In the second half, the Glenville, West Virginia native became the only active player in women's college basketball with career marks of 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 400 blocks.
Guynn pumped in 12 points to go with six rebounds.
The Mountain Lions held Frostburg State to 32.4 percent (23-for-71) from the field, and didn't allow a three-pointer in the game as FSU went 0-of-11 from beyond the arc.
Concord plays at Wheeling 5:00 p.m. Wednesday.
