Concord Uses Strong Second Half to Get Past West Virginia Wesleyan, 74-61

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team pushed past West Virginia Wesleyan, 74-61, Wednesday night in a Mountain East Conference game inside the Carter Center.

After trailing 23-18 after one quarter, Concord (2-1) held the Bobcats (0-2) scoreless for over seven minutes of the second quarter to grab a 32-28 lead at halftime. In the second period, the Mountain Lions limited WVWC to two field goals and forced six turnovers.

While the defense wasn't as stingy in the second half—allowing 33 points—CU found a groove offensively as it scored 21 points in the third quarter, another 21 in the fourth. Up 32-20 after the Bobcats scored on the opening possession of the second half, Concord went on a 17-5 run to grab a 49-35 lead with 3:33 left in the quarter.

Junior guard Maggie Guynn led the scoring with six points, but six different players scored in the spurt. Additionally, Concord poured in three of its eight three-pointers during the run.

Wesleyan got as close as seven points near the end of the third quarter, but a Guynn triple and a free throw from sophomore guard Ashton Funderburg got the Mountain Lions' lead back to double figures after three quarter.

WVWC got as close as eight points in the final period, but a free throw from senior forward Riley Fitzwater, an offensive rebound put back for senior guard Keely Lundy and a three-pointer from junior guard Gracie Robinson swelled the lead to 14 points before CU won by 13.

Fitzwater finished the game with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocks. Guynn and  Lundy were responsible for six of the eight total three-pointers, three from both players. Guynn finished with 17 points and Lundy with 13.

Robinson tallied seven points and seven rebounds. Lundy also added seven boards.

CU shot 50 percent (13-for-26) in the second half, and 42.2 percent for the game (25-for-59) while limiting the Bobcats to 37.3 percent (25-for-67).

Concord travels to play Davis & Elkins at 2:00 p.m on Saturday.
