Concord Splits Saturday Games in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Concord University softball team split its first two games during its spring break trip Saturday evening.

The Mountain Lions (6-3-1) downed Upper Iowa 15-2 before being clipped by Indianapolis, 5-2.

Game 1: Concord 15 – Upper Iowa 2 (Five Innings)
Concord scored a combined 13 runs in the third and fourth innings to easily take care of the Peacocks.

After two runs in the second inning, senior utility Jenna Witt got CU going in the third with a leadoff home run before three other players recorded RBI in the frame for Concord. Witt closed the inning with a two-run home run to score sophomore third baseman/outfielder Sarah Thompson, who had tripled ahead of Witt.

Thompson and Witt were in the middle of the scoring in the fourth inning as Thompson collected her second RBI of the game with a single. Witt followed the base hit with a three-run home run to push the Concord lead to 15-0.

Upper Iowa scored once each in the fourth and fifth innings.

Witt finished the game with three home runs and six RBI. Thompson collected three hits and two RBI. Senior second baseman/outfielder Amber Stokes also had two RBI. Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Laura Thompson had three hits at the top of Concord order.

Freshman pitcher/outfielder Josie Brewer (2-1) tossed a complete game as she scattered six hits and struck out five.

The 15 runs were the most scored by the Mountain Lions since 2013.

Game 2: Indianapolis 5 – Concord 2
Concord raced out to a 2-0 lead after two innings, but the nationally-ranked Greyhounds scored five unanswered runs.

Stokes accounted for both CU runs in the second inning as her first home run of the season plated senior pitcher/outfielder Darby Fitzpatrick.

UIndy tied the game in the third inning before taking a 5-2 lead with three runs in the fourth. The Mountain Lions had the tying run at the plate in both the fifth and sixth innings, but could not cut into the deficit.

S. Thompson had two of the six Concord hits.

Junior pitcher/outfielder Cartney Schoolcraft (2-1) was charged in the loss as she allowed four earned runs and struck out four in four innings.
