ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team did not lead until the final at-bat of the game when sophomore outfielder
Josh Adkins gave the Mountain Lions a walk-off 7-6 win over Pitt-Johnstown in a non-conference contest at Anderson Field.
Trailing 6-4 entering the bottom of the 11
th, Concord was forced to rally for the third time in the game.
Back-to-back walks to junior infielder
Anthony Stehlin and senior infielder
Nathan Neff started the 11
th-inning comeback. Senior outfielder
Adam Linkous followed with a double to the left centerfield gap to score Stehlin. During the next at-bat, Neff raced home on a wild pitch to the tie the contest.
After two more walks, Pitt-Johnstown pitcher Jake Ansell recorded back-to-back strikeouts to leave the bases loaded with two outs and Adkins up. The Nitro, West Virginia native stung a single down the right-field line to plate Linkous for the winning run.
CU also trailed 2-0, 3-1 and 4-1 in the contest as it forced extra innings by scoring three times in the bottom of the eighth inning. Two runs scored on a fielder's choice hit by redshirt freshman infielder
Joanthony Hernandez that also turned into a UPJ error with the bases loaded. The third run of the eighth came on a sacrifice fly from Stehlin as Adkins scored on the play.
Adkins accounted for four of the 12 Concord hits to go with two RBI in the contest. Linkous collected three hits while Stehlin had two hits and two RBI.
Stehlin (2-0) also picked up the win in relief as he struck out both batters he faced in the top of the 11
th to keep the game within reach at 6-4. The Mountain Lions used eight pitchers in the game as they combined for 11 strikeouts. Junior pitchers
Spencer Hoyt and
Logan Morrison each had three strikeouts on the afternoon.
Due to the suspension of spring sports by the Mountain East Conference, it is unclear of when Concord's next game will be.
