GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Concord University softball team's game at Lander finished in a tie, 4-4, Sunday afternoon after six official innings due to rain.
The Mountain Lions conclude the Bearcat/Fleet Invite with a record of 3-2-1. Lander is 6-1-1.
CU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as sophomore catcher/third baseman
Lauren Richardson crushed her first career home run, a two-run shot. In its next at-bat, Concord tacked on a third run as senior utility
Jenna Witt crossed home plate on an RBI groundout after a leadoff double in the second.
Up by three runs, the Mountain Lions watched LU score four unanswered runs between its at-bats in the fourth and fifth innings.
However, Concord responded to the Bearcats' rally by plating a run in the sixth to even the contest. After Richardson was hit by a pitch to start the frame, pinch runner and sophomore outfielder
Dani Bloomingdale stole second and scored on freshman catcher/outfielder's
Jolie Privett's RBI single during the next at-bat.
In the seventh, the Mountain Lions had Witt on third base after a one-out single as she represented the go-ahead run, but the inning was unable to be completed due to the weather moving through the area.
Because of the tie, no pitching decisions were recorded in the game. Junior pitcher/outfielder
Cartney Schoolcraft tossed 5.1 innings and struck out four batters. Freshman pitcher/outfielder
Josie Brewer got the final two outs in the sixth innings as she stranded a runner in scoring position.
Witt was 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Sophomore utility
Skylar Jenkins collected two hits.
Concord hosts Salem in a doubleheader 2:00 p.m. February 26.
