Concord Continues Hot Shooting in 88-51 Win Over Wheeling

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team eased to an 88-51 win over Wheeling Wednesday night in Mountain East Conference action at the Carter Center.

After shooting 64.9 percent at Fairmont State over the weekend, CU (15-8, 11-6 MEC) picked up right it left off as it shot 55.2 percent (32-for-58) in the win Wednesday night over the Cardinals (9-14, 8-9 MEC).

The Mountain Lions opened up an 18-6 lead six minutes into the game after a layup from sophomore guard Maggie Guynn. Wheeling answered with a quick 6-0 spurt to get the Concord lead back to single digits. However, freshman guard Ashton Funderburg knocked in a three-pointer with 48 seconds left in the first quarter, and Guynn hit one of her two triples in the game at the end of the period to stretch the lead back to double digits—a place it would remain for the rest of the game.

CU held a 49-21 advantage at halftime as junior forward Riley Fitzwater had already put together 17 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks in the opening 20 minutes. She finished with 23 points, 17 rebounds and four blocks in 27 minutes.

Wheeling started the second half on a 9-3 run to cut the advantage to 51-30, but 12 of the next 14 points belonged to Concord capped by a three-pointer from junior guard Keely Lundy—one of four in the game for the Galax, Virginia native—to get the lead back to 31 points.

The Mountain Lions led by 40 points two different times in the game, 82-42 and 85-45, before settling for the 37-point win.

Fitzwater led all scorers in the game as she notched her 14th double-double of the season. A game after tallying a career-high 15 points at Fairmont State, Lundy set another career best with 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting Wednesday.

Guynn tossed in 15 points, and senior forward Madison May netted 10 points. Sophomore guard Gracie Robinson had just seven points, but tied her career high with seven assists.

While shooting 55 percent, Concord held WU to 31.7 percent (20-for-63). CU also had a 41-30 advantage in rebounding.

The Mountain Lions play at West Liberty 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
