ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team held Davis & Elkins to 13 second-half points in an 82-47 win Saturday afternoon at the Carter Center in Mountain East Conference action.
Up 39-34 at halftime, CU (11-4, 8-2 MEC) immediately came out of the intermission and scored 14 unanswered points to go up 53-34 at the 4:15 mark of the third quarter after sophomore guard
Maggie Guynn completed an old-school, three-point play. Dating back to a late first-half field goal, Concord held the Senators (2-13, 2-8 MEC) scoreless for 6:50 of the contest while it built the 19-point advantage.
The Mountain Lions outscored D&E 20-8 in the third quarter and led by at least 15 points for the remainder of the quarter. CU once again had a strong start to the fourth quarter as it held Davis & Elkins to two points over the first 6:33 of the period and built a 34-point lead after back-to-back three-pointers from freshman guard
Jazz Blankenship at the 3:47 mark of the fourth before going on to win by 35 points.
Concord started fast as it tallied 27 first-quarter points while shooting 73.3 percent (11-for-15) from the field. Included in the first quarter outburst was CU making its first seven shots to start the game. Despite the torrid pace, the Senators stayed right with the Mountain Lions, trailing by four after 10 minutes of play.
After D&E shot 50 percent in the first quarter, Concord limited Davis & Elkins to 15.6 percent (8-for-51) over the final 30 minutes.
Senior forward
Madison May was the game's leading scorer with 19 points to go with seven rebounds and a team-best seven assists. Junior forward
Riley Fitzwater just missed a triple-double with 18 points, 15 rebounds and nine blocks while shooting 9-for-14 from the floor.
With a strong finish to the game, Blankenship scored 12 points. Guynn and freshman guard
Gracie Robinson each added 10 points in the win.
For the game, CU shot 52.5 percent (31-for-59).
Defensively, Concord forced 17 turnovers and came up with 11 steals led by freshman guard
Ashton Funderburg's four takeaways.
The Mountain Lions head back out on the road 5:30 p.m. Wednesday against Charleston.
