BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team was limited to one run in a 7-1 defeat by Notre Dame Thursday night in the opening round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament at Epling Stadium.
The lone run of the contest for the Mountain Lions (33-16) came from senior catcher
Jordan Clark who launched his 35
thcareer home run with two outs in the fourth inning to tie the game 1-1 at the time.
NDC (26-25) broke the tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 4-1. It appeared Concord would threaten the Notre Dame advantage in the top of the seventh. After an error, sophomore infielder
Anthony Stehlin singled and senior infielder
Brett Simmons walked to loaded the bases, but NDC's All-MEC First Team reliever Todd Marshall recorded consecutive strikeouts to escape the CU rally.
The Falcons padded their lead with three runs in the bottom of the seventh for the final margin of victory.
Clark tallied two of the six hits for Concord and now has 199 career RBI.
Senior pitcher
Will Guay (6-4) was charged with six runs in 6.1 innings as he recorded seven strikeouts to set a new single-season program record with 82.
CU faces Shepherd 3:30 p.m. Friday in an elimination game for the Mountain Lions. On Thursday, Shepherd defeated UVa.-Wise, 5-3.
