SALEM, Va. – The Concord University softball team won two elimination games Saturday afternoon at the MEC Tournament as it defeated UVa.-Wise and Charleston at the Moyer Sports Complex.
With the wins, Concord improves to 36-18 on the season which sets a program record for regular season wins.
Game 1: Concord 3 – UVa.-Wise 2
A two-run single in the second inning from sophomore outfielder
Dani Bloomingdale gave Concord a lead it would not relinquish.
Three straight batters reached with one out for CU including singles from sophomore catcher/utility
Kaitlyn Stewart and junior utility
Amber Stokes. Bloomingdale stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and lofted a single that just stayed fair in shallow left field to plate senior catcher/first baseman
Lauren Blunt and Stewart.
Guarding a 2-0 lead, sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Cartney Schoolcraft retired 10 straight batters until a leadoff single in the fifth from the Cavaliers that came around to score. However, the Mountain Lions answered after a one-out triple from senior utility
Kylie Kent. Blunt followed with a groundout to get Kent across and stretch the lead back to two runs.
UVa.-Wise scored for the second straight inning with a run in the sixth, but Schoolcraft got one of her nine strikeouts on the day to strand the tying run at third base. Schoolcraft surrendered a base hit in the seventh, but ended the game with a swinging strikeout.
Schoolcraft tossed her 12
th complete game of the season while scattering five hits and two runs.
Five different batters had hits in the contest with Bloomingdale adding two RBI.
Game 2: Concord 12 – Charleston  2 (Five Innings)
Concord used 12 hits and took advantage of eight Charleston errors to cruise to an elimination win over the Golden Eagles.
CU got three runs in the first inning as junior utility
Jenna Witt and Kent recorded back-to-back RBI hits including Witt's 17
th double of the season. The Mountain Lions two more scores in the second inning to go up 5-0 before a two-run Charleston home run in the top of the third cut into the lead.
However, Concord quickly jumped back on the board while taking advantage of four of the eight UC errors in the frame. All five runs came with two outs after two groundouts to begin the inning and all five tallies were also unearned.
The Mountain Lions crossed home twice more in the fourth on two more Charleston errors.
Schoolcraft earned her second win of the afternoon by tossing 3.1 innings as she struck out three and gave up two earned runs.
Bloomingdale went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Kent, freshman pitcher/outfielder
Laura Thompson and Witt all had two hits.
