WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team saw its season end in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional 1 Tournament as it was defeated by West Liberty, 6-2, at the Hilltopper Softball Complex.
Tied 2-2 heading to the top of the fifth after the ninth home run of the season by junior utility
Jenna Witt knotted the game, the Hilltoppers scored four runs on three hits in the top of the fifth to race out to a 6-2 advantage.
Prior to Witt's home run, it appeared West Liberty may add to its lead of 2-1 in the top of the fourth. With runners on second third bases and none out, sophomore outfielder
Dani Bloomingdale ran down a fly ball in left field before firing home to cut down a run.
Sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Cartney Schoolcraft kept WLU off the scoreboard in the first two innings, however, West Liberty struck first with a two-run home run off the bat of Katie Beeman.
Beeman's home run was answered by a Concord home run as junior utility
Amber Stokes sent her second home run of the season over the left field fence to cut the deficit in half for the Mountain Lions in the bottom of the third inning.
Tied at 2-2 after Witt's fourth-inning home run, Concord loaded the bases in the same inning, but was unable to get any more runs across before WLU's four-run frame.
Stokes and Witt accounted for the RBI for the Mountain Lions.
Schoolcraft (18-7) was tagged with the loss as she went all seven innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out two.
Friday was the final game in the careers of seniors
