Concord Sweeps Urbana, 10-2, 8-4

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team swept a doubleheader from Urbana, 10-2 and 8-4, Thursday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at the CU Softball Field.

CU improves to 28-17 overall and 16-10 in the MEC with the wins. Urbana falls to 5-41 and 2-24 against league foes.

Game 1: Concord 10 – Urbana 2 (Six Innings)
The Mountain Lions scored in every inning with the exception of the second on its way to a run-rule win in game one.

Urbana jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with two runs in the top of the first.

After Concord cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame, CU took the lead in the third with three runs. Freshman utility Sarah Thompson, junior utility Jenna Witt and senior utility Kylie Kent recorded three straight hits with Kent driving in two runs after Witt's double.

Thompson provided two more runs in the fourth with a home run down the left field line to expand the advantage to 6-2. Up 7-2 in the fifth after an RBI double by senior catcher/first baseman Lauren Blunt, freshman pitcher/outfielder Laura Thompson added to the lead with a two-RBI single to plate Blunt and junior utility Amber Stokes.

Kent put the finishing touches on a game one victory by singling in pinch runner and sophomore utility Skylar Jenkins in the bottom of the sixth. Witt had started the frame by collecting a base hit before Jenkins moved to second on a wild pitch.

The Thompson sisters and Witt combined for nine hits at the top of the Concord order. S. Thompson had three RBI while L. Thompson added two.

Laura was sharp in the circle as she improved to 6-5 overall, tossing all six innings while allowing just two runs on three hits. She also struck out three.

Game 2: Concord 8 – Urbana 4
Concord erased an early 4-1 deficit as it scored seven unanswered runs to complete the sweep of the Blue Knights.

UU scored a run in the first and added two more in the second with one coming on a home run. Stokes answered in the bottom of the frame by driving in a run with one of her three hits in the nightcap.

Urbana came back quickly with another solo home run before L. Thompson responsed with her own solo home run out to right field in the third inning.

Down 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Stokes and L. Thompson were in the middle of a five-run frame for the Mountain Lions. Stokes brought in the first two runs of the inning after a Blunt double and a Blue Knights' error. With Stokes and sophomore Dani Bloomingdale in scoring position, Thompson shot a single into center field to push Concord in front 6-4. CU's final run in the inning came on an infield single by Witt.

The Mountain Lions added one more run on another UU error in the sixth inning.

Stokes and L. Thompson each had three RBI. Stokes led the way with her three hits while four other CU batters had two.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Cartney Schoolcraft moved to 12-5 on the season as she tossed the final five innings in relief. Schoolcraft gave up one run on two hits and retired 15 of the 17 batters she faced.

CU welcomes Notre Dame to Athens with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader Monday.
